On Thursday, Ontario voters will head to the polls to cast a ballot to determine which party leader will be the province’s next premier. While the deadline to vote by mail has come and gone, voters will still be able to head to their local voting centre to cast a ballot until Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. or head to the polls on election day.Just six per cent of eligible voters in Ontario took advantage of advance voting in this year’s general election, preliminary data shows, which means plenty of Ontarians are expected to head to the polls on Thursday. Where…
Who would be the most expensive choice for premier? That’s the question the Progressive Conservatives and Liberals are trying to answer for each other as the Ontario election campaign enters its final stretch. For close to a year, the PCs have tried to frame Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, who they see as their leader Doug Ford’s main rival, as an expensive choice to be premier with a history of being irresponsible with public money.Soon after Crombie became leader, the party began buying ad spots trying to link Crombie to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and define her as expensive and out-of-touch.It also…
Falling down stairs, pushing stuck cars out of snow banks and cancelling events are just some of the challenges candidates have faced on the winter campaign trail, but Sol Mamakwa may have them all beat. This is Ontario’s first winter election campaign since 1981 and the incumbent NDP candidate for Kiiwetinoong in northwestern Ontario has rented a plane with skis so he can try to visit some of the 24 fly-in First Nation communities in his riding that spans nearly 300,000 square kilometres.“(It’s) not too bad, but it’s frickin’ cold right now,” he said recently during a break from campaigning in Pickle…

Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford is repeating comments about judges on the campaign trail that triggered a barrage of complaints from the legal community when he made them last year as premier. After leaked audio emerged of Ford expressing his support for the death penalty at the beginning of the campaign, the PC leader has been forced to defend his comments as a “poor-taste” joke.Speaking on Thursday, Ford said his death penalty comments — where he said home invaders who kill people should be sent to “sparky” — were a joke borne of frustration.“You know what my frustration is?…
The Progressive Conservatives are looking to win a third consecutive majority government for the first time in more than 50 years when Ontario votes on Thursday. PC leader Doug Ford said he called the snap election because he needs a renewed mandate to deal with U.S. trade uncertainty despite already holding a decisive majority. His main rivals — the NDP’s Marit Stiles, Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie and Mike Schreiner of the Green Party — have suggested the unusual winter campaign is Ford’s gambit to pre-empt a federal election and any revelations from an RCMP investigation into his government’s now-reversed decision to…
Southlake Health’s Regional Cardiac Program says it responded to double the usual number of heart attacks last week, and doctors say it’s linked to shovelling snow. The Newmarket hospital confirmed that between Feb. 12 and 20, it saw 34 patients with heart attacks linked to shovelling snow.“It certainly seemed like the volume was much greater than normal, and there’s no question that it was linked to the weather,” said Dr. Chris Overgaard, chief of the department of cardiac health at Southlake, the regional hub for emergent heart attack care servicing York Region and southern Simcoe County. He said this past week was…
In some ways, her political career began at the community pool. As part of a synchronized swimming team during their childhoods in Newfoundland, Marit Stiles and her younger sister, Enid, regularly had three-hour practices, weekend meets and competitions.“Probably the first time I saw her leadership was on our teams in synchro,” Enid Stiles said in a phone interview from her veterinary practice in Quebec. Her older sister was a natural, she said, somebody their teammates would often ask for.“She was very good at her choreography.”The precision and artistry of synchronized swimming might have given the now-Ontario NDP leader a leg up…
A Chinese national who stabbed two strangers — one fatally — on a TTC train more than two years ago has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder. Neng Jia Jin’s guilty plea Monday came just as the trial for 55-year-old Chinese national was set to begin, and just days after Jin’s lawyers brought an application to be removed as counsel due to a “breakdown” in relationship.Jin has admitted that on Dec. 8, 2022, he fatally stabbed 31-year-old Vanessa Kurpiewska, who was a passenger on a train that was stopped at High Park station. He has also admitted that…
