Key questions answered &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>After more than five decades in power, the al-Assad dynasty in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/syria\">Syria<\/a> was toppled on Sunday as President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/bashar-al-assad\">Bashar al-Assad<\/a> fled to Russia and rebels took the capital Damascus.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Assad\u2019s departure brought to a dramatic close his nearly 14-year struggle to hold onto control as his country fragmented in a brutal civil war.<\/p>\n<p>While the rebel coalition was made up of several factions, the group believed to be leading the offensive across Syria is the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, or HTS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"section-heading\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"l-article__sectionAnchor c-sectionHeading__anchor\" id=\"what-is-hayat-tahrir-al-sham\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c-sectionHeading__title\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat is Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to the United States<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/nctc\/ftos\/hts_fto.html\"> National Counterterrorism Center\u2019s list of foreign terrorist organizations,<\/a> Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is a coalition of northern Syria-based \u201cSunni Islamist insurgent groups\u201d that evolved from Jabhat al-Nusrah, or \u201cNusrah Front.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That is al-Qaida<strong>\u2019<\/strong>s former branch in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s leader, Abu Mohammed al-Golani \u2014 which is alternately spelled as al-Jawlani and al-Jolani \u2014 broke ties with al-Qaida in 2016. The Syrian native was detained by the U.S. military but remained in Iraq, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During that time, an al-Qaida splinter group formed called the Islamic State of Iraq, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, a popular uprising in Syria against Assad triggered a brutal government crackdown and led to all-out civil war. Al-Golani\u2019s prominence grew when al-Baghdadi sent him to Syria to establish a the Nusrah Front.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get breaking National news<\/h3>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The U.S. government has put a US$10 million bounty on him.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the Associated Press reported that al-Golani had defied al-Baghdadi\u2019s calls to dissolve the Nusrah Front and merge it with al-Qaida\u2019s operation in Iraq, to form the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Canada<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Al-Golani nonetheless pledged his allegiance to al-Qaida, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-insurgents-algolani-hts-aab4c8894238904a4e351076726499fb\">which later disassociated itself from ISIS.<\/a> In 2016, he also broke away from al-Qaida.<\/p>\n<p>As he entered Damascus behind his victorious fighters Sunday, he dropped his nom de guerre and referred to himself with his real name, Ahmad al-Sharaa, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSyria deserves a governing system that is institutional, not one where a single ruler makes arbitrary decisions,\u201d he said <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-insurgents-algolani-hts-aab4c8894238904a4e351076726499fb\">in an interview with CNN last week,<\/a> offering the possibility HTS would eventually be dissolved after Assad falls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t judge by words, but by actions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ferry de Kerckhove, former Canadian diplomat and former Canadian ambassador to Egypt, said western nations might have to sit down at the table with al-Golani.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe has a bounty of (US) $10 million that the Americans have put on him. He swore loyalty to Zarqawi (Abu Musab al-Zarqawi) then to Baghdadi (Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi) and broke with both and formed his own organization. Now he\u2019s trying to look like a statesman.
