Homebuilders have long asked for a reduction in the fees they pay, claiming the charges levelled by municipalities to pay for infrastructure and local amenities are prohibitively high.<\/p>\n<p>Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca appears to agree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelopment charges have become an unfair tax burden on homebuyers,\u201d he said in a statement announcing the development charge drop.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cToo many of our residents, in particular young families in our community, have seen their dream of buying a home close to where they grew up disappear completely as housing prices have spiraled out of control. We have a housing affordability crisis and it\u2019s time for us to get real about the solutions needed to solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get breaking National news<\/h3>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The move was praised by the Building Industry and Land Development Association, a developer lobby group, which has been calling for an overhaul of the fees its members pay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will enhance the financial viability of future projects, unlocking potential investment and stimulating supply,\u201d BILD president Dave Wilkes said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Politics<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The fee drop for builders comes as towns and cities province-wide struggle to get housing projects off the ground, leaving the Ford government\u2019s plan to build 1.5 million new homes by 2031 in danger of failure.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Financial Accountability Officer of Ontario found housing starts were down 17 per cent year-on-year over the summer, with development of single-family homes heading for a 69-year low.<\/p>\n<p>That followed equally disappointing projections in the government\u2019s Fall Economic Statement predicting the province would fail its annual housing goals every year until at least 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Housing Minister Paul Calandra told Global News Vaughan was making the right decision by cutting development charges.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really great first step for Vaughan, it had some of the highest \u2013 if not the highest \u2014 DCs in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will start to see the fruits of this \u2014 it will start to pay off for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles, whose party recently unveiled its vision of a new deal for municipalities, said the decision to cut development charges had been brought on by provincial neglect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hear from developers certainly that development charges remain a concern,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think cities are trying to come up with solutions to get building happening and what\u2019s missing here is the province.
