She said that if \u201clocal communities and local municipalities\u201d came to the province and said some land was \u201ctrapped\u201d in the Greenbelt, they could \u201cask for that to be exchanged for other (new) Greenbelt land.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Liberal campaign was firm that that is not the party\u2019s position in the 2025 general election.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnlike Doug Ford, who tried to sell-off the Greenbelt for over $8 billion to his rich friends, Bonnie Crombie will keep the Greenbelt whole,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe will protect our water, farmland and green spaces for this and the next generation. Any review of lands that should be added to protect those vital resources will be considered.\u201d<\/p>\n
During an election debate, party leaders were equally clear.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Doug Ford when asked during the Ontario Leader\u2019s Debate whether a re-elected Progressive Conservative government would build housing on the Greenbelt.<\/p>\n
Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, NDP Leader Marit Stiles and Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner also shut down the idea.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was chair of Big City Mayors we made it very clear that we could accommodate the housing that was necessary all within in the municipal boundaries that had existed,\u201d Crombie said during the debate.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur farmland is not up for grabs,\u201d said Stiles. \u201cWe have plenty of other opportunities and space within urban boundaries to build the housing we need.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Greens have promised to expand the greenbelt and create a new \u201cfarmbelt\u201d in Ontario.<\/p>\n
The election will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
