{"id":18194,"date":"2025-02-26T11:09:19","date_gmt":"2025-02-26T11:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/26\/where-do-ontarios-parties-stand-on-the-greenbelt-as-10-year-review-approaches\/"},"modified":"2025-02-26T11:09:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T11:09:19","slug":"where-do-ontarios-parties-stand-on-the-greenbelt-as-10-year-review-approaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/26\/where-do-ontarios-parties-stand-on-the-greenbelt-as-10-year-review-approaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Where do Ontario\u2019s parties stand on the Greenbelt as 10-year review approaches?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The future of Ontario\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/greenbelt\">Greenbelt<\/a> will be re-examined again this year as the Ontario government prepares to embark on a mandatory 10-year review to determine whether parcels of land should be added or removed \u2014 a process that Doug Ford\u2019s Progressive Conservatives have offered little information on.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When the two-million-acre Greenbelt was first created by the former Liberal government in 2005, the legislation mandated a review of the land every decade after thorough consultation with \u201cany affected public bodies\u201d including the Greenbelt council, Ministry of Natural Resources, municipalities and the public.<\/p>\n<p>That process was turned on its head in 2022 when the Progressive Conservative government passed legislation and regulations that eliminated provincial protections for a total of 7,400 acres of land to build 50,000 homes.<\/p>\n<p>After reversing that decision, the Progressive Conservatives tabled new legislation to restore the removed lands, add 9,400 acres into the Greenbelt and laid out a new process for the mandatory 10-year review.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMoving forward, this review will be led by impartial, nonpartisan experts in conservation, agriculture and environmentalism, and will include engagement with Indigenous communities and municipalities,\u201d the party said in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce final, the experts\u2019 recommendations will be provided to the Auditor General and the Commissioner of the Environment for consultation to ensure that the review process was fair and guided by the recent recommendations to improve the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford has yet to reveal who will be tapped to lead the expert panel but at least one Progressive Conservative candidate has been using the spectre of the review as a campaign talking point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Politics<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Greenbelt is not Algonquin Park; How much will seniors get?<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<p>Speaking to reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9769701\/bonnie-crombie-ontario-greenbelt-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after she officially launched her Liberal leadership bid in 202<\/a>3, Crombie outlined a situation in which she said she would be open to swapping land out of the protected Greenbelt, if she eventually became premier.<\/p>\n<p>She said that if \u201clocal communities and local municipalities\u201d came to the province and said some land was \u201ctrapped\u201d in the Greenbelt, they could \u201cask for that to be exchanged for other (new) Greenbelt land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Liberal campaign was firm that that is not the party\u2019s position in the 2025 general election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike Doug Ford, who tried to sell-off the Greenbelt for over $8 billion to his rich friends, Bonnie Crombie will keep the Greenbelt whole,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cShe will protect our water, farmland and green spaces for this and the next generation.
