{"id":18115,"date":"2025-02-25T17:04:03","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T17:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/25\/ultra-processed-foods-tied-to-4-in-10-heart-and-stroke-deaths-in-canada-national\/"},"modified":"2025-02-25T17:04:03","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T17:04:03","slug":"ultra-processed-foods-tied-to-4-in-10-heart-and-stroke-deaths-in-canada-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/25\/ultra-processed-foods-tied-to-4-in-10-heart-and-stroke-deaths-in-canada-national\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultra-processed foods tied to 4 in 10 heart and stroke deaths in Canada &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Canadians consume a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/ultra-processed-foods\/\">ultra-processed foods<\/a>, like nuggets, fries and soda, that have been linked to nearly four in 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/heart-disease\">heart disease<\/a> and stroke events in Canada, including death, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Research funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartandstroke.ca\/-\/media\/pdf-files\/what-we-do\/news\/nilson_moubarac_upf_2025_en.pdf?rev=62e596a8210146a081305b6a838ffb5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada<\/a> published Tuesday showed that ultra-processed food and drink make up more than 40 per cent of the total daily energy intake among Canadians aged 20 years and older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that ultra-processed foods are a significant contributor to the burden of heart disease and stroke in Canada,\u201d said Virginie Hamel, a registered dietitian and PhD candidate at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, who worked on the study.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian research \u2013 a first of its kind \u2013 found that an estimated 37 per cent of all new coronary heart disease and stroke cases and 38 per cent of all deaths from these cardiovascular diseases among adults in 2019 could be blamed on the consumption of ultra-processed food.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In other words, 96,043 new cases of heart disease and stroke and 17,417 deaths in Canada that year were attributable to such foods, researchers said. These include cheese, tofu, simple bread and canned beans.<\/p>\n<p>Soft drinks, chips, chocolate, candy, ice cream, sweetened breakfast cereals, packaged soups and hot dogs are some examples of ultra-processed food products are high in sugar, salt and fat, which have already been associated with heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10517450\/ultra-processed-foods-brain-health-risk-study\/\">A study published<\/a> in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000209432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neurology\u00a0medical journal<\/a> in May 2024 found that a 10 per cent increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with a nine per cent increased risk of stroke, including in people with no history of a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>The most common signs of stroke can be spotted with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stroke.org\/en\/about-stroke\/stroke-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acronym FAST.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This includes face dropping, arm weakness studies also published in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/384\/bmj-2023-077310\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMJ in February 2024<\/a> found that higher exposure to ultra-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of 32 damaging health outcomes, including cancer, major heart and lung conditions, mental health disorders, and early death.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the burden of disease, the Heart and Stroke Foundation study also looked at the effects of cutting back and increasing ultra-processed food consumption.<\/p>\n<p>It found that if Canadians reduced their intake of ultra-processed food by half, it could lead to 45,914 fewer new cases of cardiovascular disease and 8,314 fewer deaths from cardiovascular disease in a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if we only reduce by 20 per cent, we know that we can reduce the burden by 17 per cent, or 3,000 lives per year,\u201d Hamel said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the flip side, ultra-processed food consumption going up by 50 per cent would result in 19,979 more cases and 3,489 additional deaths from heart disease
