His threat of 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs, with a lower 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy, is currently on pause.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get breaking National news<\/h3>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jackson said that if Canada should need a major new program to provide income supports to keep people and businesses afloat in a trade war, sending the public service into turmoil would be the \u201cwrong approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor someone to say they will balance the budget in three years means they will be making massive cuts to the programs and policies Canadians rely on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said Gould has committed to increasing the salaries of Canadian Armed Forces members and that she supports remote work that ensures \u201cproductivity, fairness and the effective delivery of government services.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As part of a spending review, the Liberal government announced in its 2024 budget a plan to find savings through attrition in the federal public service.<\/p>\n<p>While cutting permanent employees wasn\u2019t part of the initial plan, federal departments and agencies have since started to announce layoffs and reductions in hiring. She has not answered questions from The Canadian Press about whether she would trim through layoffs or hiring freezes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy government will use tax dollars responsibly,\u201d her website says. \u201cI will pay for these measures by reducing the cost of running government \u2014 without cutting the benefits and services Canadians count on. This means cutting red tape, streamlining how government does business, and leveraging new digital and AI tools to deliver benefits and services to Canadians, faster and better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about his plans for the public service and whether he would like to see it shrink, Liberal leadership candidate Frank Baylis said the bureaucracy has been growing at a faster pace than the population and \u201cwe need to look at what\u2019s happened and why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It would be \u201csimplistic\u201d to implement across-the-board layoffs, said Baylis.
