How much would that cost? &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>If there\u2019s one sector in the Canadian economy that has faced the particular focus of U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s tariff threats, it\u2019s Canada\u2019s auto industry.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Trump has said that he wants to \u201cmake the cars in Detroit,\u201d indicating that he wants to replace Canada\u2019s industry with a fully domestic American car industry.<\/p>\n<p>But experts say it could end up costing the U.S. tens of billions of dollars and in the end, the squeeze might not be worth the juice.\u00e5<\/p>\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6368624897112\">interview with Fox News<\/a> earlier this month<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0Trump said Canada \u201cstole\u201d the automobile industry from the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at Canada, Canada has a very big car industry. They stole it from us. They stole it because our people were asleep at the wheel,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIf we don\u2019t make a deal with Canada, we\u2019re going to put a big tariff on cars. Could be a 50 or 100 per cent because we don\u2019t want their cars. We want to make the cars in Detroit.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But can that be done?<\/p>\n<p>A map depicting car manufacturing facilities in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not feasible,\u201d said Brian Kingston, president and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association. \u201cIt\u2019s not realistic to onshore the entirety of the North American automotive industry into the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWe\u2019ve had, for over 60 years, policies that have been purposely designed to create an integrated North American industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"section-heading\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"l-article__sectionAnchor c-sectionHeading__anchor\" id=\"how-does-the-auto-sector-work\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c-sectionHeading__title\">\n\t\t\t\tHow does the auto sector work?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The automobile manufacturing sector and its supply chain in Canada and the United States have been deeply integrated since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1965, former prime minister Lester B. Pearson and former U.S. president Lyndon B. We think closure costs are upwards of US$500 million on a (car manufacturing) plant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canada has 14 car manufacturing facilities, all in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>American companies General Motors and Ford Motor Company have three plants each in Canada, while three belong to Stellantis, which is partly American owned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Canada<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By Volpe\u2019s estimate, closure costs on nine plants alone would be around US$4.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>To build them from scratch in the United States, which has higher currency rates and labour costs than Canada, would cost billions more.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Volkswagen announced they were investing US$2 billion in building a new plant in South Carolina. Volpe said US$2 billion is a pretty good estimate for how much each plant would cost to build. For nine plants, that would cost US$18 billion. For all 14 plants, it would cost $28 billion.<\/p>\n<p>This estimate includes neither the 26 car manufacturing plants in Mexico, nor Canada\u2019s vast car parts manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are 1,400 parts and tools facilities in Canada. If you look at the amount of investment that has been announced by automakers and suppliers in North America since 2020, it\u2019s over US$288 billion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It would also take a long time, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would take years, anywhere from three years to a decade, to build out assembly plants on that scale. They just spent US$1.5 billion retooling that line so that it can build both internal combustion engine Dodge Chargers and EV Dodge Chargers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re going to try to bring that home, you\u2019d basically be uprooting US$2 billion investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kingston said the advantages of keeping Canada and Mexico within the North American supply chain go beyond just the dollar value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes us so attractive is we have a highly educated, highly skilled workforce. We have a history of automotive manufacturing and people that are very close to the industry and have skills that they can provide to the industry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Chinese automaker BYD dethroned Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla as the number one EV maker in the world. Kingston said the U.S. needs Canada to have any chance of beating China in the EV race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina controls about 80 per cent of the inputs that go into advance batteries. The only other source that you have in the Western Hemisphere is Canada.
