French literature of the 20th century owes her a great debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Born on May 10, 1929, in Bouctouche, N.B., Maillet earned a PhD in literature in 1970 from Universit\u00e9 Laval in Quebec City. Her novels were often adapted for the stage, blending adventure, desire, frustration, suffering, and joy.<\/p>\n<p>Her play \u201cLa Sagouine,\u201d first performed in 1971 with Viola L\u00e9ger in the title role, was a massive success, helping to instil pride in Acadians and contribute to a cultural revival. \u201cP\u00e9lagie-la-Charette,\u201d meanwhile, made her famous in France, selling more than a million copies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Canada<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised Maillet for her literary achievements and for her \u201cunwavering\u201d advocacy on behalf of Acadians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a beacon of Acadian pride and resilience, and I know her voice will continue to inspire generations to celebrate the stories that make Canada\u2019s cultural tapestry so rich and diverse,\u201d Trudeau said in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n<p>New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt described Maillet as a \u201cliterary trailblazer, and a fierce champion of the French language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on X, Holt added: \u201cThrough her powerful storytelling, including the iconic \u2018La Sagouine,\u2019 she brought the rich culture of New Brunswick to the world stage. What do I have to lose now by saying what I think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maillet was named a companion of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of New Brunswick and a commander of the Order of the Legion of Honour of France, among other honours.<\/p>\n<p>Her dedication to the Acadian people played a significant role in their cultural growth in recent decades. In a speech in France in 2004 to mark the 400th anniversary of the first Acadian settlement, she declared, \u201cAcadia needs to say that it exists, that it is part of \u2026 the francophonie worldwide, and therefore, it has its place in the world \u2014 a unique place, just like every other people in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1989, she became the first woman to serve as chancellor of Universit\u00e9 de Moncton, holding the position until 2000.
