Federal Liberal<\/a> leadership hopeful Mark Carney<\/a> drew hundreds in Kelowna<\/a>, B.C., on Wednesday, promising economic improvements and standing firm against the U.S.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of what I\u2019ve talked about has to do with the economy. It\u2019s part of why I put my hand up initially \u2014 it\u2019s the challenges from the Americans who have made it more acute,\u201d said Carney.<\/p>\n

The former Bank of Canada governor unveiled a five-step plan, including a balanced budget in three years, middle-class tax cuts, increased building, and ramped-up international and national trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is not Canada, and Canada will never ever be part of America in any way, shape or form,\u201d said Carney.<\/p>\n

Carney addressed President Donald Trump\u2019s plan to make Canada the 51st state as well as his ongoing tariff threats.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll negotiate when it\u2019s time to negotiate with the Americans when they\u2019re serious, when they want to come to the table for the whole thing,\u201d said Carney.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re not going to wait for that and we\u2019re going to focus, if I\u2019m elected, on building this economy from the Okanagan up.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Leger\u2019s latest federal polling, Mark Carney leads potential successors to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with 37 per cent, followed by Chrystia Freeland at 12 per cent and Karina Gould at 3 per cent.<\/p>\n
