{"id":16370,"date":"2025-02-12T20:56:14","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T20:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/12\/alberta-premier-defends-her-government-amid-corruption-allegations\/"},"modified":"2025-02-12T20:56:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T20:56:14","slug":"alberta-premier-defends-her-government-amid-corruption-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/12\/alberta-premier-defends-her-government-amid-corruption-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta Premier defends her government amid corruption allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she still has confidence in Health Minister Adriana LaGrange despite allegations involving political interference and conflict of interest in the awarding of contracts by Alberta Health Services (AHS).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters on Wednesday morning during a trip to Washington, D.C., with Canada\u2019s Premiers, Smith said she first became aware of the allegations against her office and the health minister when she saw reports in the media.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations were outlined in a letter sent by the lawyer of former AHS CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos\u00a0to the Globe and Mail.<\/p>\n<p>It alleges that AHS was pressured to approve private contracts and that the former AHS CEO was fired two days before a meeting with the auditor general to discuss her concerns about private surgery facilities and procurement contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations are being investigated by the province\u2019s auditor general.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re interested in hearing what the auditor general has to say,\u201d said Smith when asked about the scandal during a news conference. \u201cWe\u2019ve already set up a shared file so that they can get all the documents that we have to see if there is any wrongdoing. If there\u2019s wrongdoing, we\u2019d like to get to the bottom of it.
