{"id":16315,"date":"2025-02-12T11:49:52","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T11:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/12\/after-40-years-in-politics-mississaugas-newest-mayor-says-shes-not-done-yet-toronto\/"},"modified":"2025-02-12T11:49:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T11:49:52","slug":"after-40-years-in-politics-mississaugas-newest-mayor-says-shes-not-done-yet-toronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/12\/after-40-years-in-politics-mississaugas-newest-mayor-says-shes-not-done-yet-toronto\/","title":{"rendered":"After 40 years in politics, Mississauga\u2019s newest mayor says she\u2019s not done yet &#8211; Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>When Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish resigned from a regional police board, citing the need to be openly critical of the largest budget increase in the force\u2019s history, her decision took many by surprise.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But to those who\u2019ve known her long enough, this is how the 78-year-old former member of Parliament has always approached politics \u2013outspoken, bold and sometimes controversial.<\/p>\n<p>After quitting the Peel Police Services Board last fall, Parrish said the $144-million boost to the police budget \u2013 62 per cent of which is covered by Mississauga taxpayers \u2013 was \u201cunreasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason I had to quit is you have to sign a pledge when you go on the police services board never to disagree with a decision made at the board \u2013 publicly,\u201d she said in an interview in her office last month. \u201cI had no choice but to resign.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The unusual move has been one of the hallmarks of her early mayorship.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish was elected to lead Canada\u2019s seventh largest city in a June 2024 byelection, succeeding Bonnie Crombie who had resigned to run for leadership of the\u00a0Ontario\u00a0Liberal Party.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish, a former high school teacher, first became interested in politics 40 years ago after a \u201chead-to-head\u201d with her children\u2019s school principal motivated her to start attending Peel District School Board meetings, and eventually become a board trustee in 1985.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Politics<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1993 and left federal politics more than a decade later as an independent, after getting kicked out of the Liberal caucus over her anti-American remarks during the invasion of Iraq and criticism of her own party and then-prime minister Paul Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish then served on Mississauga\u2019s city council for years before winning the mayoral race.<\/p>\n<p>She said four decades in politics isn\u2019t enough for her, as she gears up to run for a full term as mayor in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have lots of things I want to finish,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the things she has accomplished so far, and the way she did that, have attracted attention.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the campaign trail, Parrish said that she would try to avoid using the so-called strong mayor powers \u2013 a provincially granted authority that allows mayors to override bylaws and fire and hire department heads, among other moves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get breaking National news<\/h3>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, she used the powers several times in her first week in office, which included firing the city\u2019s chief administrative officer and hiring interim leaders of certain departments.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish said she reinstated the power to make hiring and firing decisions back to the new CAO, Geoff Wright, after he was made permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Mississauga, a city of around 800,000 people just west of Toronto, is struggling with a housing crisis, rising cost of living, property tax increases and worsening traffic congestion. Parrish said one in 13 Mississauga residents used food banks last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a massive problem. It was an unprecedented hike approved by Peel regional council after hours of heated debate in late January.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish said it was \u201cquite devastating\u201d to see members of her own council had joined \u201cthe other team in the middle of fight.\u201d She said she had pushed for a smaller police budget hike of 14 or 18 per cent, to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish said the new cost of policing will raise property taxes in Mississauga by an additional six per cent \u2013 without producing better results in tackling crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact on our taxpayers is going to be horrendous,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, who sits on the Peel Police Services Board, has argued that public safety outweighs concerns over tax hikes.<\/p>\n<p>Police need more officers and resources to address rising crime rates in the region, particularly intimate partner violence, Brown told a recent regional council meeting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several other members of the Peel police board did not respond to requests for comment from The Canadian Press.<\/p>\n<p>Parrish may have lost her battle over policing costs, but she warned that doesn\u2019t mean the fight is over.<\/p>\n<p>She said her next move will be to work with the province to make sure her city\u2019s tax dollars are spent transparently by the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole process of police budgets has to change, there\u2019s too much secrecy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script defer src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;appId=318812448281278&#038;version=v3.3\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11015305\/mississauga-new-mayor-carolyn-parrish\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish resigned from a regional police board, citing the need to be openly critical of the largest budget increase in the force\u2019s history, her decision took many by surprise.
