{"id":15631,"date":"2025-02-10T23:02:28","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T23:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/10\/saskatchewan-government-announces-special-warrants-for-nearly-1b-in-new-spending\/"},"modified":"2025-02-10T23:02:28","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T23:02:28","slug":"saskatchewan-government-announces-special-warrants-for-nearly-1b-in-new-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/02\/10\/saskatchewan-government-announces-special-warrants-for-nearly-1b-in-new-spending\/","title":{"rendered":"Saskatchewan government announces special warrants for nearly $1B in new spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/saskatchewan-government\">Saskatchewan government<\/a> has announced over $920 million in additional funding on Monday to \u201caddress cost pressures and respond to emerging issues\u201d across a broad range of government sectors.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The government said the $923.1 million is part of a special warrant which will give ministries additional funding when the legislature is not in session.<\/p>\n<p>The province said the special warrants will provide essential funds to meet the needs of the health system, crop insurance payments, public safety agency, highways, education, correctional services, and \u201cincreased costs due to the ratification of various collective bargaining agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In total, 15 government organizations received funding through the special warrant. The funding comes from the Government of Saskatchewan\u2019s General Revenue Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The breakdown is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ministry of Advanced Education ($26.4 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Agriculture ($93.1 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Corrections, Policy and Public Safety ($78.4 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Education ($54 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Energy and Resources ($4.2 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Finance ($19.2 million)<\/li>\n<li>Firearms Secretariat ($1.5 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Health ($502.9 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Highways ($61.8 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Immigration and Career Training ($3.6 million)<\/li>\n<li>Innovation Saskatchewan ($790,000)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety ($1.4 million)<\/li>\n<li>Saskatchewan Research Council ($22 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of SaskBuilds and Procurement ($3.7 million)<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Social Services ($50 million)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get daily National news<\/h3>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Saskatchewan economics professor Ken Coates said these sorts of warrants are not out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing particularly unusual about these kinds of things,\u201d Coates said. \u201cThey are a way some governments will sometimes respond to crisis, but there\u2019s also other times when it\u2019s just bad planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coates said the threat of tariffs and uncertain future could\u2019ve contributed to the special warrants\u2019 high price tag , however, he believes it is more likely due to bad budgeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t put a special warrant together in 10 minutes. This is money that was spent in the fall or bills that rang up,\u201d Coates said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Canada<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After catching wind of the warrants, official opposition leader Carla Beck and her team are itching for their return to the assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be back into that legislature for an emergency session,\u201d Beck argued. \u201cI continue to hear that from Saskatchewan people that they are desperate for information, that they are desperate to see all of their leaders in this province engaged, taking this seriously and mounting an effective response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coates said with a very close majority\/minority government, the NDP won\u2019t be afraid to hold the Sask. Party accountable<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow there\u2019s a lot more scrutiny and so what I think the NDP is doing very appropriately is they\u2019re saying, \u2018We\u2019re watching these special warrants, (the Sask. Party says) they\u2019re essential, we\u2019re not sure they are.
