The Peace Arch, straddling British Columbia and Washington state, is meant to symbolizes that friendship. The women have gone back and forth, while the Americans own three of the last the world junior hockey championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one place, maybe the only place, where Canada has been the big brother,\u201d Rubenson said of the rink. \u201cIt\u2019s been easy for Canadians to be generous toward Americans there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rivalry has been tough yet friendly, he added, but the change in tone from the White House might signal a change in that relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical and social issues can spill over,\u201d Rubenson said.<\/p>\n<p>Fans and politicians could get riled, but will the players actually care?<\/p>\n<p>Many Canadians suit up for American-based teams. U.S. captain Auston Matthews, meanwhile, wears the \u2018C\u2019 for the Toronto Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if they live in the real world,\u201d Ettinger said of NHL stars. \u201cThey generally live in the elite republic of hockey without much sense of what\u2019s going on in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubenson, whose specialization includes sports and politics, doesn\u2019t expect much change in terms of the on-ice clash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat rivalry is already super intense,\u201d he said. \u201cHardcore fans don\u2019t need excuses.
