Their common goal is to help an Original Six franchise with a long Stanley Cup drought finally break through.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews and Marner have largely played on the same line for Toronto in recent seasons. Nylander sometimes gets thrown in the mix when the team needs an offensive jolt. The star forwards are all key components on the power play.<\/p>\n<p>And like much of the world\u2019s top hockey talent, it\u2019s all about to be put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament \u2014 NHL players\u2019 return to high-level international competition \u2014 gets going next week in Montreal and Boston.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland are set to take part in the round-robin showcase that concludes with a one-game final Feb. 20. Friends and teammates, meanwhile, will quickly shift to opponents sporting opposite colours.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be different,\u201d Matthews, the U.S. captain, said of facing Canada\u2019s Marner and Sweden\u2019s Nylander. \u201cYou\u2019re used to having those guys on your side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 World Cup represented the last time men\u2019s hockey saw something resembling a best-on-best event. The NHL went to five straight Olympics between 1998 and 2014, but skipped 2018 for financial reasons before COVID-19 shelved 2022 plans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" Really excited about that opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota Wild head coach and U.S. assistant John Hynes expects his NHLers will show growth competing in a different sort of high-stakes environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hope that everything goes well for everybody,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great experience. It\u2019s only going to benefit us down the stretch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly \u2014 among the list of names thrown around for Canada\u2019s blue-line corps prior to rosters being announced in early December \u2014 said he will be paying close attention to Matthews, Marner and Nylander.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect those guys to be ready to go \u2026 they\u2019re playing great hockey,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be a little bittersweet. You\u2019ll be cheering for everyone, but your loyalty lies with your country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthews, who\u2019s in his first season as Leafs captain, added there won\u2019t be an issue flipping the switch from friend to foe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll definitely be a little bit weird,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the end of the day, you\u2019ve got to go out there and compete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all want to win.
