Ontario\u2019s relationship with America under the spotlight, political opponents claim those close to Progressive Conservative Party Leader Doug Ford may be benefitting from his approach to U.S. policy.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Weeks before Ford called a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalnews.ca\/tag\/ontario-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snap election campaign<\/a> with the threat of tariffs looming, his campaign director signed an \u201cexclusive partnership\u201d with a Washington D.C.-based lobbying firm.<\/p>\n<p>That firm, Capitol Counsel, had recently received a government contract under Ford\u2019s past administration for up to $1.3 million to help position Ontario with the next American administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so like Doug Ford to take care of his rich friends and rich insiders first rather than the people of Ontario, to provide the very basics for people,\u201d Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The deal signed in August by Ford with Capitol Counsel included a stipulation the American company \u201cdevise a plan for the first 100 days of the new Congress and administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox agreement, Ontario under Ford has been operating a full-on charm offensive with the United States, paying to run a multi-million dollar campaign of commercials across U.S. networks, sending ministers to Washington D.C. and arranging meetings between Ford and several governors.<\/p>\n<p>Months after the Progressive Conservatives signed off on a contract between the U.S. lobbying firm and the Ontario government, Capitol Counsel announced it had formed a partnership with a company run by the chair of Ford\u2019s re-election campaign.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In January, the firm signed an \u201cexclusive partnership to navigate cross-border trade and government relations\u201d with Rubicon Strategies, the Ontario-based lobbying company headed by Ford\u2019s campaign manager and close ally, Kory Teneycke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis strategic partnership comes at a crucial time as tensions surrounding trade policies dominate headlines and the potential for wide-reaching tariffs on Canadian goods,\u201d a Jan. 7 news release said.<\/p>\n<p>The PC campaign said Teneycke had not helped Capitol Counsel get Why some won\u2019t budge<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<p>\u201cKory Teneycke has taken a leave of absence from Rubicon to manage the Ontario PC campaign and has recused himself from any work related to Capitol Counsel,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rubicon did not respond to questions in time for publication but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrillium.ca\/news\/politics\/pcs-opponents-decry-us-lobbyists-deals-as-another-way-fords-putting-insiders-first-10173713\">told The Trillium<\/a> the company did not have any financial stake in Capitol Counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Teneycke also ran Ford\u2019s 2022 election campaign and is a key adviser to the PC leader.
