tariff on Canadian goods for a month, but Tyler Pubben isn\u2019t letting his guard down.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The president of Tapmaster \u2014 a Calgary business making faucets with brass and polymer from the U.S. \u2014 is looking to reduce the company\u2019s reliance on the U.S. by beefing up sales at home, expanding into new markets and seeking alternate suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been easier to sell to the U.S. just because the U.S. customer base is larger,\u201d he said Tuesday. \u201cBut the political environment is just not as trustworthy as it was even two weeks ago, so we\u2019re actively looking for ways to diversify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pubben\u2019s attitude is much the same across Canada\u2019s small business community, which is refusing to treat Trump\u2019s 28-day reprieve as a sure thing because it\u2019s seen how unpredictable and brash the president can be.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tTapmaster president Tyler Pubben, at his company\u2019s their supply chains, partners, margins and expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Many are even going so far as to look both closer to home and farther afield for manufacturers, suppliers and buyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s not going to be easy and it\u2019s not going to be (within) 30 days,\u201d Pubben said.<\/p>\n<p>Tapmaster needs the brass in its faucets to have no or low quantities of lead because many of its customers are hospitals, dental offices and consumers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" hard to find,\u201d Pubben said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s only a couple of companies that make it,\u201d he said, rattling off a list of suppliers that are predominantly in the U.S., Germany and situation. Her business, Chickapea, is based in Collingwood, Ont., but makes its pulse-based pastas in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our pasta being both high protein and gluten-free, it takes really specialized equipment and expertise to produce \u2014 and the people who have really developed expertise in making this type of pasta are just not located here at the moment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Because Chickapea ships its products to Canada from the U.S., it would be subject to Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs, so the company is working with its manufacturer as it considers other solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s $30-billion retaliation package meant to exact revenge has been put on hold to match Trump\u2019s pause but would apply 25 per cent tariffs on a wide swath of goods entering the country from the U.S., including uncooked pasta.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If it\u2019s enacted, Taylor said Chickapea \u201cwouldn\u2019t have a choice but to pass on some of the cost to the consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s absolutely not what we want to be doing as we are already somewhat of a premium product in the natural food space, but there\u2019s no way that we could avoid it and have a business that was sustainable,\u201d she said. \u201cThe margins are not there for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tThe still-looming threat of steep U.S. tariffs facing Canadian small businesses owners means many of them have begun searching for suppliers and customers from other countries.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Karen Danudjaja, the owner of Vancouver-based beverage powder brand Blume, has been mulling some of the same scenarios but isn\u2019t keen on passing along costs to customers.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she\u2019s treating the respite as one month for Blume to be more thoughtful about its supply chain and consider how to decrease its U.S. reliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a time for us as Canadian business owners to take another look at that to see if there are other opportunities we should be exploring in the near term,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Blume sources ingredients like turmeric and cinnamon from countries such as Sri Lanka, India and the U.S., but it produces and packages its hydration powders just outside of Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>The tariff feud arrived as the company was about to launch its products in Whole Foods grocery stores in the U.S., so Danudjaja said it\u2019s been trying to build up inventory in warehouses south of the border to delay any impacts of potential higher levies.<\/p>\n<p>Even if she can get product across the border without facing the higher tariffs, Danudjaja frets about how American shoppers will react to her brand.\u00a0 \u201cWill U.S. customers rally around a Canadian product right now?\u201d she questioned.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than get lost in fears, Danudjaja was resolving herself to trying to be positive about the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be easy for me to get stuck there, but ultimately, there\u2019s always going to be something on the horizon,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cWe just have to take control of what we can, make the best
