Matt Poirier, vice-president of the Retail Council of Canada, said such sentiment can often \u201cebb and flow,\u201d and while retailers sell and promote Canadian goods, it\u2019s not the only products that can be sold.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality for the retail sector is that while there are many Canadian goods that we could probably promote a bit more and encourage, it\u2019s never going to be everything that Canadians want to buy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we\u2019re going to have to continue sourcing from the U.S. We\u2019re going to have to continue sourcing from global partners like we\u2019ve been doing for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, as retailers were preparing for the currently paused tariffs to come into effect, they began looking at sources from abroad for non-American products to sell.<\/p>\n
Economist Moshe Lander said while the move to buy Canadian is \u201cnoble,\u201d it\u2019s \u201cfoolish in practice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re now going to shift to buying Canadian to teach Americans a lesson, are we prepared to pay higher prices for lower quality? And if we\u2019re going to inflict that damage on ourselves, is that going to really dent Americans in a way that makes them sit up and say, \u2018Hey, maybe we want to reconsider this?’\u201d Lander said.<\/p>\n

Even with questions about how impactful a \u2018Buy Canadian\u2019 movement can be, Naylor said he believes people in the country should focus on supporting each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if it\u2019s (tariffs) all rescinded, who cares? Let\u2019s focus on our own stuff. There\u2019s no reason not to do it,\u201d Naylor said. \u201cWe\u2019re a strong, very, very fantastic country and let\u2019s just do it. Let\u2019s be Canadian.\u201d<\/p>\n
