Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum<\/a> revealed that she had \u201ca good conversation\u201d on Monday morning with U.S. President Donald Trump,<\/a> \u201cwith great respect for our relationship and sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a post<\/a> on X, Sheinbaum said the two reached \u201ca series of agreements\u201d during their conversation, two days after the Mexican president ordered retaliatory tariffs in response to the U.S. decision<\/a> to slap 25 per cent levies on all goods coming from Mexico<\/a> as a trade war broke out between the two neighbours.<\/p>\n

\u201c1. Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl,\u201d Sheinbaum wrote, explaining the agreements.<\/p>\n

\u201c2. The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico. 3. Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Sheinbaum also said that the fourth agreement is that the United States is \u201cpausing tariffs for one month from now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump confirmed on TruthSocial they had a \u201cvery friendly conversation\u201d and that they will \u201cimmediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a \u2018deal\u2019 between our two Countries,\u201d he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Sheinbaum said that reason should prevail a day after her government and the U.S. announced tariffs<\/a> against one another, raising her fist in the air as she said she does not lack the courage to respond.<\/p>\n

Trump said on Sunday that the sweeping tariffs he imposed on Mexico, Canada and China may cause \u201csome pain\u201d for Americans, as Wall Street and the largest U.S. trading partners signalled hope that the trade war would not last long.<\/p>\n
