Gov. Edith Dumont on Tuesday<\/a> to trigger an election, a year and a half ahead of the date he was required to do so.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But with 16 months left on his term as premier, and 64 percent of the seats in Ontario\u2019s legislature, why would it make sense for Ford to call an <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/ontario-election\/\">election<\/a> so far ahead of schedule?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the question he\u2019s probably asking himself is, \u2018Will things be any better in a year and a half or now for the government?\u2019\u201d said Darrell Bricker, global CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs. \u201cAnd given what\u2019s potentially pending from the United States relative to tariffs, there\u2019s probably a chance that it won\u2019t be a \u2026 lot better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are several benefits for the Progressive Conservatives to call an election now, including the fact that most polls show them well ahead of the opposition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been looking for an opportunity to call it for a long time,\u201d noted John Milloy, who is the director of the Centre for Public Ethics at Martin Luther University. \u201cThey\u2019ve been ahead in the polls.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since the last election in 2022, two other parties have also introduced new leaders into the mix, with the Liberals having chosen Bonnie Crombie and the NDP going with Marit Stiles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth opposition parties have relatively new leaders who are still finding their feet,\u201d said Milloy, who served as a provincial Liberal cabinet minister in a previous life.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Schreiner remains the Ontario Green Party leader, with two seats when the legislature was dissolved.<\/p>\n<p>With the other two major parties having introduced new leadership, they may also have trouble matching the PC\u2019s war chest as well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe other parties, I don\u2019t think, have these same kinds of fundraising infrastructure situations,\u201d noted Western University professor Laura Stephenson.<\/p>\n<p>While there are obvious benefits for Ford, voters in Ontario may be less impressed by his move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest con is that people say, \u2018Why are you calling it early?\u2019 and they get suspicious or are unhappy with having to go to the polls,\u201d Stephenson noted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"tp_video\">\n<div people are going to be purists about it and say, \u2018You know, he didn\u2019t wait his four years,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stephenson noted that his opponents will attempt to use this against him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the opposition parties are trying to make those kinds of statements, saying this is a waste of taxpayer money, we should be focusing on other things, etc.,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m not sure how effective they\u2019re getting their message out into the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on tried to frame the election around whether he is the man to lead Ontario \u2014 and Canada \u2014 in the battle against Donald Trump and the U.S. president\u2019s threat of tariffs on Canadian products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something on that front doesn\u2019t happen the way that Doug Ford said it was going to happen, he\u2019s putting an awful lot in the hands of somebody else,\u201d Bricker explained, noting that the U.S. president could decide to take things in a number of different directions.<\/p>\n<p>With Trump in the foreground, along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepping down, in effect becoming a lame duck, Ford\u2019s election call creates a leadership void in the country\u2019s biggest province at a time when he is painting a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a school of thought that says the premier should be being premier and he should be continuing his work, which I think everyone has said has been good work and not trying to muddy it with an election,\u201d Milloy said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe is bound by the caretaker principle and although he\u2019s going to try to insert himself into the national conversation, he\u2019s a candidate for premier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ontario will also have to deal with a wild card in Trump who may force Ford to make some decisions at a time when that may not be in his best interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s going to mean that Ford is going to have to push forward and he\u2019s going to have to make some decisions to the best of his judgment,\u201d Stephenson said. \u201cBut any time you make tough decisions, you create people who aren\u2019t going to be happy with those to be on the same page with regard to keeping an eye on potential hostilities south of the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere seems to be a consensus that that\u2019s drawn out from all political parties, that we need to have this kind of a measured approach that Doug Ford\u2019s put forward,\u201d Milloy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I don\u2019t think Bonnie Crombie or Marit would be that much different. They had Bob Rae and Bob Rae was a bit of a rock star in Canadian politics,\u201d Bricker offered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoug Ford isn\u2019t facing a Bob Rae with Marit Styles or with Bonnie Crombie.
