once again given their seal of approval for the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/green-line-lrt\">Green Line LRT<\/a>, greenlighting an updated plan for the project that could see construction begin later this year.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Council\u2019s decision late Tuesday will allow for shovels in the ground on the southeast segment of the Green Line between Shepard and Victoria Park.<\/p>\n<p>It also commits to a two-year functional study on the downtown alignment to examine things like property and safety impacts, validating cost estimates and advancing design.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable c-figure--contained c-figure--containedPortrait\">\n<div pull its $1.53 billion in funding for the project if the city didn\u2019t elevate and shorten the line through the downtown core, instead of a previously planned tunnel through to Eau Premier Danielle Smith said Wednesday when asked about council\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pleased they made the decision to go ahead and allow shovels to get in the ground as soon as this early part of the year,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThen we can continue to work on how we expand the alignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div project.<\/p>\n<p>Taking questions from reporters on Tuesday, Jyoti Gondek shared concerns\u00a0 over cost overruns and legal liability would fall completely on the City of Calgary, after the province said it wouldn\u2019t earmark any additional funds to the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one thing I\u2019m 100 per cent confident in is the province will bully their way through this project,\u201d Line.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Calgary is the majority funding partner in the $6.2-billion megaproject with a 46-per cent share, followed by the Government of Canada at 27 per cent and the provincial government with a 26-per cent share.<\/p>\n<p>City administration also warned it found an additional $1.2 billion in cost and risks not accounted for in the province\u2019s will be impacted if an LRT travelled above his front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want no part of it,\u201d Batas said. \u201cAt least come and talk to us when you propose something.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox__inner\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cIt sounds like the province just arbitrarily said, \u2018This is what we\u2019re going to do.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prior to council\u2019s decision, a group of four organizations representing downtown property owners and the city\u2019s construction industry sent a letter to the province outlining concerns over impacts to property values, and the business environment downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Guy Huntingford, with NAIOP Calgary, said the groups are disappointed in council\u2019s decision but remain hopeful a fulsome study could derail plans for an elevated alignment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cConstruction wouldn\u2019t start until 2027 at best,\u201d Huntingford told Global News. \u201cWe feel there\u2019s certainly an opportunity there over those next two years to really sit down and take a look at some various options.\u201d<\/p>\n<div southeast segment of the line, there is some excitement construction could begin later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary work has been ongoing in the area to make way for tracks and future stations in both Ogden and Lynwood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, people are supportive, people would love to be able to take the (LRT) downtown or to the south hospital or to a hockey game,\u201d said Zev Klymochko with the Millican-Ogden Community Association.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox__inner\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cBut it\u2019s these delays and cost increases that have soured people on it a little
