The move was widely expected by markets and most economists.<\/p>\n<p>The quarter-point reduction marks a step down from the Bank of Canada\u2019s moves to cut by an oversized 50 basis points in its two previous decisions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/money123.jpg\" alt=\"Get expert insights, Q&amp;A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get weekly money news<\/h3>\n<p>Get expert insights, Q&amp;A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The central bank shifted its monetary policy stance from tightening to easing last year amid signs inflation had come back under control and the slowing economy could use a boost.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While annual inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10969549\/inflation-canada-december-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooled to 1.8 per cent in December<\/a>, there were signs of stubbornness in metrics of core inflation that are closely watched by the Bank of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into Wednesday\u2019s decision, some economists argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10976455\/bank-of-canada-donald-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the threat of tariffs from the United States merited another rate cut<\/a> from the Bank of Canada amid fears of a sharp hit to the Canadian economy if U.S. President Donald Trump were to pull the trigger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential for a trade conflict triggered by new U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports is a major uncertainty. This could be very disruptive to the Canadian economy and is clouding the economic outlook,\u201d said Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem on Wednesday, according to prepared remarks.<\/p>\n<section
