Raj Dhaliwal to remove a provision that would have allowed taxi companies to set their own rates.<\/p>\n<p>During times of increased demand, companies like Uber and Lyft often implement \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/surge-pricing\/\">surge pricing<\/a>,\u201d making the ride more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>But the city\u2019s maximum rate for taxi companies remains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the taxi industry is afraid that somehow, the rates are going to get lowered\u2026. This was an opportunity for taxi drivers to raise their rates when demand exceeds supply,\u201d Chabot says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was intended to help support the taxi industry. Removing it takes away that opportunity for the taxis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A taxi industry advocate who spoke at city hall on Tuesday says the main concern for his colleagues is the price of insurance and licensing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s dying,\u201d Abd Alla Bakhit told reporters when asked about the state of his industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely strange.
