NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh<\/a> on Tuesday suggested he could work with the Liberal government and other opposition parties to discuss plans to support workers impacted by U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> looming tariffs, but said he still plans to bring down the government at the earliest opportunity.<\/p>\n

Singh called on the Liberals<\/a> to present a support plan to opposition leaders and then recall Parliament, which is currently prorogued until March 24, to pass legislation before that date.<\/p>\n

He pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic when Parliament held emergency sessions to pass relief and other financial supports.<\/p>\n

But Singh said \u201cnothing is on the table\u201d at the moment and currently, his position has not changed on voting non-confidence in the government quickly after Parliament returns from prorogation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have maintained my position that I\u2019ll be voting against the government at the earliest opportunity,\u201d Singh told reporters in Burnaby, B.C.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Liberals are serious about providing more support to workers \u2014 and I think they should \u2014 then bring the opposition leaders together, present a plan. They have not done that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House reiterated Tuesday<\/a> that Trump still intends to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n

The federal government is also looking at a relief package to help businesses and industries affected by Trump\u2019s tariffs. Multiple premiers have said provinces are considering relief plans much like those introduced during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Any new federal spending would need approval from Parliament.<\/p>\n

Asked about that potential aid package Tuesday, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson told reporters that \u201cwe need to ensure we\u2019re trying to shield Canadians from the fallout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Singh said he has not heard anything from the Liberals about such a plan, but said he will push for workers to be supported.<\/p>\n

Singh added he would also support recalling Parliament early to pass legislation that addresses the recommendations laid out in the final report of the foreign interference inquiry, which was released earlier Tuesday.<\/a><\/p>\n
