{"id":14692,"date":"2025-01-28T15:37:38","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T15:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/01\/28\/no-immediate-plans-to-close-private-ontario-nurse-practitioner-clinics-despite-new-guidance\/"},"modified":"2025-01-28T15:37:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T15:37:38","slug":"no-immediate-plans-to-close-private-ontario-nurse-practitioner-clinics-despite-new-guidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/01\/28\/no-immediate-plans-to-close-private-ontario-nurse-practitioner-clinics-despite-new-guidance\/","title":{"rendered":"No immediate plans to close private Ontario nurse practitioner clinics despite new guidance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The Ford government has no immediate plans to shut down for-profit nurse practitioner clinics in Ontario despite receiving clear direction from the federal government on the gradual elimination of the fee-for-service facilities.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The province has been under pressure from health-care advocates and political opponents to tackle the rise of private nurse practitioner clinics that charge patients for everything from initial intake visits, urgent appointments, follow-up appointments and prescription refill requests.<\/p>\n<p>While Canada\u2019s health-care system prevents out-of-pocket fees, private nurse practitioner clinics began popping up in 2024 after they didn\u2019t receive provincial funding as part of the Ford government\u2019s nurse practitioner-led clinic program.<\/p>\n<p>Last spring, more than a dozen such clinics popped up across the province.<\/p>\n<p>The Canada Health Act also allowed nurse practitioners to operate in a grey area since the law governing the country\u2019s health-care system only included language around physicians and hospital workers but didn\u2019t specifically outlaw private clinics from opening.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones called that a \u201cloophole\u201c that prevented the province from cracking down and repeatedly asked the federal government for clarification on the Canada Health Act.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get weekly health news<\/h3>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In early January federal Health Minister Mark Holland updated the Canada Health Act to specifically allow provinces to treat nurse practitioners and pharmacists like physicians, letting them create billing codes for additional health-care providers and creating a path for independent nurse practitioner-led practices to operate under the public system.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Holland also told provinces his expectation was that they would enact the changes, which come into force in 2026. Provincial governments that fail to implement billing codes would see health-care funding withheld, Holland said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Politics<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Ontario, as the Ford government prepares for a snap election, Jones didn\u2019t appear to be in a hurry to act now that the loophole she asked Ottawa to fix has been addressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing, and what I want to see, is opportunities for nurse practitioners who are training, who are in the province already, to be able to work in multi-disciplinary teams,\u201d Jones said at a news conference on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Asked repeatedly if she had no immediate plans to close the for-profit nurse practitioner clinics operating across Ontario, Jones pivoted to talk about a separate announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will respectfully say that $1.8 billion expanding primary care practitioners in the province of Ontario is huge action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) is calling on the province to speed up a new funding model for nurse practitioners in which they are \u201ccompensated fairly and competitively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t support the for-profit clinics, yet, closing them without creating a parallel stream of funding for nurses, for NPs that cannot find work and that waiting to serve the public, will do more harm than good,\u201d said RNAO CEO Doris Grinspun.<\/p>\n<p>While the province has until 2026 to clamp down, Grinspun said the timeline \u201cdoesn\u2019t prevent them from moving faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liberal health critic Adil Shamji believes there\u2019s more to the province\u2019s delay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSylvia Jones was entirely evasive on the issue of what she\u2019s going to do with existing private paid nurse practitioner clinics and that\u2019s entirely consistent with her approach to privatization in her health care system,\u201d Shamji told Global News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been happy to turn a blind eye to refer the problem to other people and to pretend as though there\u2019s nothing that she can do,\u201d Shamji added.<\/p>\n<section id=\"content-related-items-1\" class=\"l-inlineStories l-inlineStories--text \" aria-label=\"Related articles section 1\">\n<\/section><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n\t\t&amp;copy 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc.\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script defer src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;appId=318812448281278&#038;version=v3.3\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10980333\/ontario-nurse-practitioner-clinic-no-immediate-plan\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ford government has no immediate plans to shut down for-profit nurse practitioner clinics in Ontario despite receiving clear direction from the federal government on the gradual elimination of the fee-for-service facilities.
