That\u2019s music to my ears,\u201d says Estevan Mayor Tony Sernick.<\/p>\n<p>Canada introduced federal regulations in 2013 requiring coal-fired power plants to meet strict performance standards, hoping to limit greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Canada\u2019s government declared its plans to phase out coal-fired power generation entirely by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>While this moved the country towards achieving its emissions reduction goals, for cities like Estevan, built on mining, it risked everyone\u2019s livelihood.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201c[It] takes the wind out of your sails,\u201d says Sernick, \u201cThat\u2019s kind of why I got into, you know, just municipal politics was obviously town\u2019s dying, ghost town, everybody\u2019s moving away. Obviously we\u2019re in an oil-based town as well, so that hasn\u2019t been the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a post to X, formerly twitter, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe hinted at his intent to extend the life of coal-fired power plants while nuclear infrastructure is added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get daily National news<\/h3>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Moe\u2019s statement seemingly follows suit with Alberta, which lifted their coal-mining moratorium in the eastern Rocky Mountains just a week earlier.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Money<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sernick says Premier Moe\u2019s plan is welcome news to a city built almost entirely on mining booms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[In] a city of 11,000 like Estevan you probably have a thousand direct jobs with the coal mine itself and obviously it just spins off into probably every supply store in the town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sernick says existing power regulations seem forced, creating a gap in supply which can\u2019t be filled because newer infrastructure isn\u2019t there yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were in a situation where we were shutting off what we had and not replacing it. But again, we just need to use what we have today to get us to that future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moe\u2019s social media post also called existing federal regulations on coal unconstitutional, adding future decisions regarding power generation will based solely on what\u2019s best for Saskatchewan families and the province\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Saskatchewan\u2019s government confirmed Moe\u2019s statement, noting their focus on affordable and reliable power production using available resources.<\/p>\n<p>Sernick says it\u2019s refreshing to see some levels of government planning for future energy security beyond their own leadership term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are planning out outside of that four-year cycle, and it is a future commitment. So that\u2019s good to hear because obviously the last I don\u2019t know, let\u2019s say ten years, \u2026everything doesn\u2019t go past that four-year commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crown Investments Corporation Minister Jeremy Harrison confirmed in an op-ed (opposite of the editorial page) for Pipeline Online that Saskatchewan is looking to run conventional coal well past the federal deadline of 2030.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSaskatchewan has the resources, expertise, and proximity to be at the centre of North American energy security.
