Once again, U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> says he\u2019s confident his country will gain control of Greenland<\/a>, reasserting his claim that the autonomous Danish territory\u2019s 57,000 residents would be on board with a potential acquisition.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

His comments came during a short question-and-answer period with reporters aboard Air Force One Saturday evening as he flew to Miami from Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do believe Greenland, we\u2019ll get \u2014 because it really has to do with freedom of the world<\/a>. It has nothing to do with the United States, other than we\u2019re the one that can provide the freedom,\u201d Trump told reporters on Air Force One this weekend, per the Financial Times.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a desire Trump has reiterated since 2016, despite leaders in Greenland and other Nordic countries insisting it\u2019s not for sale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Monday, France24 reported that Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had met with her regional counterparts over the weekend to discuss defence and security, and while she didn\u2019t mention Greenland by name, she said they all \u201cshared the gravity of the situation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Nordic countries have always stood together,\u201d Frederiksen wrote on social media on Sunday evening, sharing a photograph of her hosting a dinner in her home with the leaders of Finland, Norway and Sweden.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd faced with the new and more unpredictable reality that lies ahead, close and good alliances and friendships are increasingly important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five days before Trump\u2019s Jan. 20 inauguration, Frederiksen spoke on the phone with the president \u2014 a call that was described as \u201ccontentious\u201d and \u201caggressive\u201d<\/a> by the New York Times, which spoke to anonymous European officials who were briefed on the 45-minute phone call.<\/p>\n

The sources told the outlet that Frederiksen \u201cmade various suggestions for more cooperation on military and economic issues, but insisted that Greenland, which already hosts an important American base, was not for sale<\/a>\u201d and that it was up to Greenland to determine its own fate.<\/p>\n
