{"id":14331,"date":"2025-01-27T18:02:56","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T18:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/01\/27\/ontario-election-ndp-says-it-would-initiate-purchase-of-hwy-407-remove-tolls\/"},"modified":"2025-01-27T18:02:56","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T18:02:56","slug":"ontario-election-ndp-says-it-would-initiate-purchase-of-hwy-407-remove-tolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/01\/27\/ontario-election-ndp-says-it-would-initiate-purchase-of-hwy-407-remove-tolls\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario election: NDP says it would initiate purchase of Hwy. 407, remove tolls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The Ontario NDP is promising to remove tolls from the privately owned Highway 407 for all drivers and initiate a potential purchase of the highway, Global News has learned, in a pre-election pitch to voters days before the writs are set to be issued.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Ontarians will head to the polls on Feb. 27 for an early general election after Premier Doug Ford revealed late last week that he intends to dissolve his majority government and call an early election on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>For months, Ford has hinted his party is interested in discussing a Highway 407 purchase and, on Friday, he signalled his party, if re-elected, could address the 407 tolls on the eastern, provincially owned portion of the highway.<\/p>\n<p>The NDP is looking to make the entire 407 a key election issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoug Ford has sat on his hands as tolls on the 407 have gone up, afraid to take on the private corporation that makes millions from people just trying to get to work,\u201d NDP Leader Marit Stiles said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI will negotiate on the side of the people, get us out of this bad deal, and make the 407 toll-free.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get daily National news<\/h3>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If elected, Stiles said an NDP government would remove 407ETR tolls for commercial truck operators immediately after taking office. Tolls on the provincially owned section of the highway between Pickering and Clarington would also be removed.<\/p>\n<p>The NDP is pledging to then \u201ctake back the 407\u201d by forcing the group running it \u2014 407 International Inc., owned by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Cintra and Atkins R\u00e9alis (formerly known as SNC-Lavalin) \u2014 to renegotiate with the Ontario government.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Toronto<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Policy materials shared with Global News indicate the party would look at either a voluntary negotiation between the owners of the 407ETR and the provincial government or forcing the owners to sell the highway using provincial legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of the proposal, however, is still in question.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, when the NDP first proposed moving commercial truck traffic to the 407, it estimated the policy could cost $4 billion over 30 years, citing Transportation Action Ontario. The Ford government has suggested the privately owned portion of the 407 is now worth approximately $35 billion, up from the $3.1-billion price tag when the highway was sold by then-premier Mike Harris\u2019s government in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>An Ontario NDP source admitted the cost of the plan had not yet been settled.
