Instead of preparing to start off season training, the University of Winnipeg women soccer players are rallying together for another reason \u2014 to figure out their next step.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThey brought our team in on Tuesday morning. We thought it [was] going to be about who the coach was going to be for next year\u2026but they told us the news: the program was being cut,\u201d team captain Sydney Arnold said.<\/p>\n

It was a decision the student-athletes never saw coming, their beloved sport suddenly taken away.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur team has been often undermined in the past,\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

The University of Winnipeg announced it\u2019s discontinuing women\u2019s soccer and English language programs, citing financial troubles. In a statement, the university says it\u2019s committed to working with each student individually to provide all supports possible through this difficult transition.<\/p>\n

But the girls say that\u2019s yet to happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want answers to the questions we\u2019ve been asking. We\u2019ve kind of been shut down multiple times,\u201d Isabella Caligiuri said.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time the University of Winnipeg has discontinued sports programs. The baseball team and the men\u2019s and women\u2019s wrestling teams were cut in 2017. The men\u2019s soccer team was put on hold that year, but the team never returned.<\/p>\n
