{"id":11612,"date":"2025-01-13T23:57:28","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T23:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/01\/13\/friend-of-fatally-stabbed-halifax-teen-changes-his-testimony-in-youth-court-halifax\/"},"modified":"2025-01-13T23:57:28","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T23:57:28","slug":"friend-of-fatally-stabbed-halifax-teen-changes-his-testimony-in-youth-court-halifax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torontotribune.ca\/index.php\/2025\/01\/13\/friend-of-fatally-stabbed-halifax-teen-changes-his-testimony-in-youth-court-halifax\/","title":{"rendered":"Friend of fatally stabbed Halifax teen changes his testimony in youth court &#8211; Halifax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The trial for a Halifax youth accused of participating in the killing of a 16-year-old student last year heard Monday from one of the victim\u2019s friends, but much of his testimony was debunked by a defence lawyer.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old accused, who can\u2019t be identified, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/ahmad-maher-al-marrach\">Ahmad Maher Al Marrach<\/a>, who was stabbed outside the Halifax Shopping Centre on April 22.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-year-old witness told the judge-only trial that Al Marrach had asked him via text message to gather some friends and head to the mall to watch him fight another boy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe told him not to fight,\u201d the witness, a Grade 10 student, told youth court Judge Elizabeth Buckle. \u201cHe said, \u2018No, I have to do this.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Crown and defence agree that the accused did not stab Al Marrach, but the Crown has said the evidence will show the accused planned a group assault, which he knew could lead to Al Marrach\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In court on Monday, the witness said that as he entered the mall\u2019s parkade, the fight had already started. And he said that at one point, the accused pointed his knife at him and said, \u201cGet close an see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the boy with two knives, the witness recalled him saying: \u201cDo you want to get killed?\u201d And the witness went on to say both armed boys ran toward him with their weapons drawn.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on Canada<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But under cross-examination, the witness changed key parts of his story.<\/p>\n<p>Defence lawyer Anna Mancini reminded the witness that in a statement he gave police in May 2024, he said the boy with the two knives was the only one who threatened him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of didn\u2019t hear (the accused), but I was unsure about it because everyone was yelling,\u201d the witness told the court.<\/p>\n<p>Mancini pressed for an explanation: \u201cI\u2019m going to suggest that the person who made a threat to you was not (the accused),\u201d she said. And when she asked if that content had influenced his memory of what happened on April 22, he agreed again.<\/p>\n<p>As well, Mancini challenged his assertion that the armed boys had run toward him while holding knives. The witness said that recollection was wrong after the court was shown video images from a surveillance camera inside the parking garage. Those pictures showed the witness in the foreground, and at no point does anyone approach him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI going to suggest that no one ran at you with a knife,\u201d Mancini said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree,\u201d the witness said.<\/p>\n<p>The video also appears to show the witness standing next to Al Marrach in the moments after he is stabbed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I saw the blood running down, I started running,\u201d the witness told the court.<\/p>\n<p>On another front, the defence lawyer noted that when the witness told the court that Al Marrach had said the fight was over a girl, that statement conflicted with what the witness told police.
