Investing.com– Apple Inc (NASDAQ:) is close to reaching a deal with the Indonesian government to lift a recent ban on domestic sales of its flagship iPhone, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing a minister with knowledge of the matter.
Indonesia had banned sales of the iPhone in October, citing Apple’s lack of compliance with domestic manufacturing and investment targets. But the company has since been in discussions with Southeast Asia’s biggest economy over an investment package, and is now reportedly close to lifting the ban.
Bloomberg had earlier reported that Apple’s offer for a $1 billion investment to build airtags in the country was rejected by the Indonesian government. Lawmakers had told Apple that according to local regulation, the tech giant needed to make at least part of its iPhone locally to be able to sell the device.
Indonesia is a major southeast Asian market for Apple, with the government claiming that the company had sold over 2 million iPhones in the country as of 2023.
